GRADE LEVEL: 12th grade
TIME: 5 classes
CURRICULUM CONCEPTS
“Propaganda has only one object – to conquer the masses. Every means that furthers this aim is good; every means that hinders it is bad.” –Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. Your job is to design an election poster that will convince people to vote for your preferred presidential candidate. Your poster needs to be factual, persuasive, and impactful. You will design a second poster just as persuasive and impactful but changing your facts. You will omit, exaggerate and spin your hopeful’s words in an attempt to dissuade people from voting for him/her.
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
• The student will examine, analyze and discuss different forms of propaganda. (comprehension-lower) (analysis-higher)
• The student will research facts about a particular political candidate and determine both positive and negative aspect to their candidacy.
• The student will design two election posters for a single candidate, using propaganda techniques. 1st poster will be positive (support of the candidate) in it’s message.
2nd Poster will be negative (against the political candidate)
2nd Poster will be negative (against the political candidate)
• The student will integrate Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop into a single work of art (poster).
• Student will apply the principles and elements of design throughout the entire creation process
• The student will write a reflective paper on both posters discussing/defining/analyzing the meaning, and techniques used, the process of omitting and adding information to sway an opinion, and the problems and solutions encountered during the process of creation. (analysis–higher) (evaluation-higher)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• Students can look for factual, non biased information at http://www.factcheck.org
• Students will reflect and think about what rumors have ever been spread about them, a friend or others. Which rumors did they believe without having any facts about other people? How easy is to forget a rumor about a person even when you find out it’s false?
